Sun Tzu's Modern Alignment
This famous quote from The Art of War by Sun Tzu in 500 BCE is still relevant for today's modern corporate workforce.
After doing my research on the topic, it became very clear that the organizations that fail have very little or no clarity on direction. The major chunk of the workforce in any company is comprised of middle management and their line workers, working on several projects.

Any organization that fails to excel is because the actual working and operational teams are out of sync with the executive vision of higher leadership.
It has been observed that strategy execution drops by up to 70%.
Sun Tzu's military strategy,
"He whose ranks are united by the same spirit throughout all its grades will be victorious."
is a major learning for leaders of organizations in today's world.

From Command to Alignment
In the traditional hierarchy, we used to have a chain of command, which comes from the top and has to be followed till the bottom until execution — somewhat like a dictator approach, where people simply follow orders.
Think of yourself as a part of an army. Whether cavalry, infantry, archers, or generals — everyone has a distinct role, yet all fight the same enemy with a shared objective: to win the war.
In today's corporate world, we have complex hierarchies, departments and actionables. Every employee must share the same clarity.
When teams align around a unified vision, there is active engagement and autonomy over execution. Results are bound to follow.
Commander's Intent
A high-level statement that defines the ultimate goal of an operation without micromanaging the steps.

One Vision, Different Generations
The word "grade" carries a lot of meaning, especially when today's generation is so diverse that we have defined names for every generational shift.
While working with such diverse mindsets, getting everyone under the same vision is one of the biggest challenges for leadership.
Boomers → Loyalty
Gen X → Autonomy
Millennials → Purpose
Gen Z → Flexibility
Getting different generations excited and motivated to work towards one cause or shared values takes a lot of work to build culture.
Engagement Is the Missing Link
If you remember the word from above in Sun Tzu's Modern Alignment — engagement — this is extremely important for employees to be in alignment with a united vision.
Simon Sinek, a famous culture and purpose leader, mentioned the Circle of Safety — a culture of trust where employees feel heard and understood and gain clarity on their work and the purpose of the organization.
Ultimately, alignment is not about making everyone think the same way.
It is about making sure everyone understands where we are going, why we are going there, and how their role contributes to getting there.
